History

The Brig was a type of vessel used by the Royal Navy during the 1700’s for the purposes of exploration and transport. For example, Captain James Cook’s famous ship the Endeavour was a brig vessel, written in to the history books after she helped to discover Australia. The British Empire was rapidly growing during the 1700’s and required a variety of different vessel types necessary for supporting a rapidly increasing trade network.

Similar to the Endeavour, the HM Brig Supply played an important role in the early founding of Australia. She was the first ship to arrive in Australia containing British convicts and can therefore be attributed to transporting the first Australian English-speaking populous. Vessels of this type were designed to carry heavy loads, necessary for carrying supplies and intended for long periods spent at sea.

She was launched in 1759 at Deptford and is a perfect example of the craftsmanship and expertise demonstrated by numerous British shipbuilders during possibly the greatest era of the Royal Navy.
