HMS Victory is a British Royal Navy historic battleship that is best remembered for its role in the American war of independence and the battle of Trafalgar. This first class ship was took six years to manufacture and was launched in 1765. However, due to a period of relative peace in the area, the HMS Victory was then moored and rested for 13 years. The only war ship to be still in commission, HMS Victory is currently stationed at dock number two of the Portsmouth Dockyard.
HMS Victory and its Commanders
The Royal Navy decided to include HMS Victory in the fleet of Admiral Augustus Keppel in the year 1778. When the war with France was declared in 1779, Admiral Keppel set sail with a fleet of 35 ships of which HMS Victory was the flagship. Skirmishes at the battle of Ushant led to significant damage to the hull of HMS Victory. The ship was put under the command of Admiral Kempenfelt in 1781 and was sent to intercept a convoy of French warships, which they successfully did by capturing 15 French warships and forcing them back into the naval port of Plymouth.
The next commander of HMS Victory was Lord Hood who made her his flagship and went for a successful tour in the Mediterranean. The ship was then put under the command of Sir John Jervis’s Mediterranean fleet. During this journey, the British fleet was outnumbered by the rival fleet which comprised both French and Spanish vessels. This was the time when the British fleet had to relinquish Corsica and retire. The fleet was strengthenedwith new vessels andthe arrival of Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar. The battle of St Vincent was successfully fought with Nelson as the captain of the HMS Victory.
Following this battle the ship was found unfit for war and assigned the job of a hospital ship before undergoing a significant reconditioning which was carried out over a period of three years from 1800 to 1803. This was followed by HMS Victory’s inclusion as the flagship of Nelson’s fleet which was assigned the task of combatting Napoleon. Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar helped the British clear supply lines for their European campaign. No ships were destroyed during this battle but there were a lot of casualties including Nelson. Consequently HMS Victory was retired in 1812 and put at Portsmouth where she stayed for the next 110 years.
